A Brief History

The Bloody Mary has a murky history with many claiming to be the original creator. The most widely accepted story is that of Fernand Petoit, who tended bar at Harry’s New York in Paris. Petiot was said to have named the drink after Queen Mary Tudor of England. Queen Mary was given her “Bloody” moniker after a short but violent battle with opposing family forces, and her reinstitution of the “Heresy Act”, in which hundreds of her subjects were violently executed.
At the peak of Petiot’s tenure with Harry’s New York in the early 1920’s, he was serving drinks to the likes of Ernest Hemmingway, Sinclair Lewis, Rita Hayworth, Humphrey Bogart and many other American Icons. His legendary clientele likely helped to promote the Bloody Mary and cement its place in history.

Hangover cures

The Bloody Mary is the most complex cocktail you can make, with the most ingredients of any cocktail. A concoction of vodka, tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, lemon and lime juice, and a handful of different herbs and spices creates a fabulous cocktail and hangover cure.
Every country has a tried and true remedy for a hangover, most being… more alcohol. There are, however, common themes across the globe.
Russians utilize brine from pickled cucumbers, sauerkraut, and tomatoes to stymie the effects of over drinking, while Germans break fast with katerfrühstück or “hangoverbreakfast”, a rollup of pickled herring, pickled cucumbers, onions, and other sour foods. The English have “Hair of the Dog”, which is a drink made from vodka, tomato juice and tabasco… sound familiar?
All the components of a Bloody Mary help replenish electrolytes, rehydrate, and detoxify the body. Tomato juice being the star of the show.

Choosing the right vodka

You can use pretty much any vodka over $19, pick your favorite! We prefer a potato vodka which tends to be smoother than grain vodka. If you are more partial to a clean flavor, go with a grain vodka. If you prefer a soft and buttery flavor, you might like a corn vodka!
